About Us

It all began in 1993 when we purchased an old farmstead and began restoration on the ca. 1906 farmhouse. Antiques were nothing more than old junk to us. That all changed with a simple invitation to go to a flea market with some friends. Not knowing what to expect, we tagged along. Much to our surprise, we purchased our very first antique: an old Eastlake pump organ which had been turned into a desk. That was it. That's when antiques got into our blood. Before we knew it, we were getting up at the crack of dawn to go to sales, flea markets and auctions. The thrill of the hunt. It's an addiction of sorts, though we prefer to call it a passion.

Out of necessity ("something in, something out"), we started selling a few pieces at an outdoor flea market. In 2001, after spending one too many weekends under a tarp, trying to protect our wares (and ourselves) from the rain, we decided to move the sale to the farmstead. The following year, we started restoration of the barn and began having barn sales. Each year we did a little more work on the barn, fixing it up, decorating it and turning it into a shop. The barn came with limitations, however. There is no heat so sales were limited to the summer. With little ventilation in the barn, summer sales could be miserably hot. We wanted to make this a year round business so...

On March 31, 2016, we began a new chapter in the Hen Picked Antiques business when we became the proud new owners of the former First Congregational Church building at 108 Branch Street in Hartford. This beautiful, historic church was built in 1853, nine years before the Civil War! We officially opened this location for business on Sunday, December 11th, 2016. The extra space at the church gives us the ability to have classroom and studio space and expand into the stained glass business. We carry stained glass, supplies and offer classes in stained glass, fused glass and chair caning. We continue to offer a variety of antiques and collectibles, as well as giftware and gently used items for your home and garden at great prices.

We truly enjoy seeing our customers each year, many of whom have been coming since we first opened. We take great satisfaction in bringing new life to old things. We love to hear the unique ideas for re-purposing items and seeing the before and after pictures. New customers are always welcome.

Don’t forget the wish list.  We will keep our eyes open for that perfect item for you.

Happy Hunting!

Debbie & Bob Wilhelm
